Pilot Photonics has a vision, in which its comb laser technology is deployed to tackle some of the world’s most advanced data transmission, sensing, and measurement challenges, impacting millions of lives every day.

The impact of the PICOMB project will be felt by a whole range of beneficiaries including our company Pilot Photonics directly, our customers including telecommunication module and system vendors, and their customers, the service providers and network operators who need to continuously grow their network capacity. Beyond these, the European and global consumers of internet and cloud services will benefit through new and enhanced services that can only be delivered thanks to innovations in the underlying network technology of the internet. Other Irish and European SMEs in Pilot’s supply chain supply chain will also benefit as the technology matures and reaches the market. Finally, Europe will benefit through new job creation, the retention and creation of strong intellectual property in the Key Emerging Technology of Photonics, and through the enhanced competitiveness of a high growth SME in this space.

Aside from the optical communication application being targeted through this proposal, Pilot’s optical comb source technology is a broadly applicable disruptive platform technology, applicable to many applications, which have the potential to deliver great benefits to European and global citizens. These areas include LiDAR, gas sensing, optical fiber sensing, free-space optical communication, and precision timing. Within this project, we will focus on just one of these application areas namely long haul communication, but the developments carried out will be leveraged by all of the other application areas providing a multiplicative impact benefit.
